The site on which Julian O. Strong Middle School stands was purchased by the Board of Education on July 3, 1963.
Funds to construct the school were sought during a special election held on March 18, 1964. The District overwhelmingly endorsed a $1,850,000 bond issue for the construction of a new Junior High School and called for additions to the High School in the industrial arts, cafeteria, and library areas.
Shortly after the election the Board engaged the firm of Jahr-Anderson-Machida as architects for the project. Construction bids were received and the firm of Salvaggio & Sons Construction Company was named as general contractor. Work started immediately and progresses rapidly.
A full schedule of work was scheduled for District eighth and ninth graders beginning September of 1966. However, finishing work on the building continued for a number of weeks thereafter.
Later, the ninth graders were moved to the High School and we became a seventh and eighth grade school. In September of 1988 a sixth grade class was added to the school. Today, Strong Middle School serves over six hundred students in grades six, seven and eight.
J. O. Strong Middle School continues to serve the communities of Melvindale and Northern Allen Park with an 89,274 square foot building. The school sits on a beautifully landscaped site of 18.26 acres. In the mid 1990's, the school started the transition process of moving from a Junior High School to Middle School. We are still fine tuning some aspects of that process but are today a fully accredited (North-Central) Middle School.
